The Marin/Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control District (District) actively participates in the review and planning processes for proposed development and environmental projects in Marin and Sonoma County. The District works cooperatively with the regulatory agencies, the 17 cities within the district boundaries, and project proponents to minimize the potential for mosquito production and public health issues. For example, the District is currently involved with several wetland restoration and enhancement projects in Marin and Sonoma County and reviews projects that include ponds, storm water best management practices, and irrigation.
How well this process can work has been realized in recent years in association with wetland mitigation and restoration projects within several cities in Marin and Sonoma Counties. The residents are able to enjoy the aesthetic and wildlife values of the wetland features without experiencing substantial populations of mosquitoes and the potential for vector-borne disease transmission. District involvement in wetland projects has also resulted in mosquito source reduction and enhanced habitat value for wildlife.
It is recommended that city and county planning department personnel contact and notify the Marin / Sonoma Mosquito & Vector Control District of any project that includes ponds, wetland features, irrigation, storm water treatment, or water conveyance systems that could potentially create mosquito breeding sites or affect residents' contact with mosquito or vector species.
